What happens when you book?

We’ll contact you to set a time. Then you’ll talk with Brandon Sample about the federal case or the federal prison problem.

You don’t need to know the legal terms. Tell us what happened in your own words.

What happens at the consultation?

The consultation is a one-hour meeting. We go over what has happened in the case so far, answer your questions, and explain your options in plain words.

If the case needs more work after the consultation, we will give you a written quote for that work. You decide whether to go forward.

What should you have ready?

Bring what you have. Don’t worry if you don’t have everything.

  • The court and the case number (also called the docket number), if charges were filed.
  • The judgment, which is the court’s written order stating the sentence, if your loved one has been sentenced.
  • The presentence report (PSR), the probation officer’s report the judge used at sentencing, if you have access to it.
  • The person’s Bureau of Prisons (BOP) register number, if they are in federal custody.
  • Recent BOP medical records, if health is part of the problem.

What should you avoid until you talk to a lawyer?

  • Don’t discuss the facts of the case on prison phones. Federal prisons can monitor inmate calls (28 C.F.R. § 540.102). Treat prison email (TRULINCS) the same way.
  • Don’t talk to federal agents about the case before you speak with a lawyer.
  • If no deadline is about to run out, get advice before filing anything on your own.
